AAAH Welcomes the new GHWA Executive Director


The Global Health Workforce Alliance, GHWA, recently appointed Dr. Mubashar Sheikh as its new Executive Director. Dr Sheikh succeeds Dr Francis Omaswa, on 31 May 2008. Dr Sheikh is a specialist in health system policy and planning with extensive experience in health workforce development, including the creation of the famous ‘Lady Health Workers’ initiative in Pakistan. Before joining GHWA, he was the WHO Country Representative in Iran, where he also served as Resident Coordinator of the UN system as well as Representative for FAO.
The AAAH welcomes Dr. Sheikh’s appointment to this important new role and looks forward to close collaboration with GHWA under his leadership. The AAAH also thank Dr. Francis Omaswa for many crucial development and achievements in global health workforce policies during his executive directorship. We appreciate his continuous support to the AAAH and the development of health workforce in the Asia-Pacific Region

Third AAAH Conference:Globalisation and its Implications for Health Care and Human Resources for Health

The Asia-Pacific Action Alliance on Human Resources for Health (AAAH) is organising the 3rd AAAH conference in October 2008, in Colombo/Kandy, Sri Lanka. The theme for this Conference will be “Globalisation and its Implications for Health Care and Human Resources in Health”.

The Conference aims to provide a platform for members of the alliance and global partners to exchange ideas and knowledge and to identify the opportunities and challenges to human resources in health in the current context of globalisation. It seeks to evolve an understanding of the critical and key contemporary implications of globalization for human resources for health and related aspects of health care. These ideas and implications would be addressed through context specific regional frameworks and the Conference would seek to provide policy oriented recommendations based on intersectoral strategies and pathways.

 

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES

‧ To follow up on HRH activities in member countries at the regional and global level after the 2nd conference held in 2007, and to review the progress the countries have made in reaching the objectives established in “The AAAH Workplan 2008- 2009″.

 

‧ To share experience generated from AAAH members, including WHO and other international agencies, platforms or alliance (eg. Global Health Workforce Alliance, GHWA) assisting the countries to address the globalization and its implications for health care and human resources for health.

 

PARTICIPATION

The participants will be drawn from 15 AAAH member countries, and a minimum of 3 participants per country are expected for each multi-stakeholder team which may include various interest groups such as the Ministry of Health, professionals, academia, government, non government organization, and the private sector. Resource persons from international agencies, other global or regional alliances and platforms, and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region that are considered as potential new members for AAAH will also be invited. For non-AAAH countries, participation as observer(s) is possible subject to the approval from the AAAH Steering Committee.

 

The broad themes are as follows:

-         Globalisation and its implications of health care services and Human Resources in Health- A Framework for Analysis

-         Structures of Global Governance, Health care and HRH

-         Public Sector Reform, Privatization and Decentralisation: Implications for Human Resources in Health

-         Trade in Health Services/Migration

-         Epidemiological & Demographic Transition: Coping with New Challenges

-         Training and Education of the Health Workforce

-         Globalisation, Social Change and Health

 

The attached document has the detailed list of sub themes under the broad areas mentioned above.

 

CALL FOR PAPERS

Each case study should not exceed 5,000 words with an abstract of less than 600 words. The report should include the following sections:

1. The background

2. The conceptual framework

3. The story of the case or cases

4. The lessons learnt

5. Proposal for regional or global actions.

The papers will be reviewed by the technical committee of the AAAH.

 

DATES FOR SUBMISSION

The deadline for submission of abstract is 15 August 2008. The case will then be reviewed by the Conference’s technical committee. Authors of selected abstracts will be asked to submit full papers and will be invited and funded to present their cases at the Sri Lanka AAAH Conference. All contributors will be informed of the decision by 31 August 2008.
